Biography

Born in Le Havre in 1973, Jace grew up on Réunion island, where he first picked up a spray can in the late 1980s. In 1990, while studying biology in Saint-Denis, he created what would become his signature figure: the Gouzou, a small orange character with no face, hands or feet, whose mood shifts with the news of the day — sometimes melancholic, sometimes punk, joyful or rebellious.

His first show, Biografitti, opened in Le Havre in 1996, and from 2003 onward he devoted himself full-time to painting while developing a second practice of advertising poster subversion. In 2015, he was commissioned to cover the Pont des Arts railings in Paris after the love locks were removed.

The Gouzous have since spread across roughly thirty countries, from France and the Indian Ocean to Asia, Africa and the Americas. Choosing to keep his civil identity private, the artist still lives and works on Réunion island.
