Biography
Volodymyr Manzhos, known as Waone, is a Ukrainian artist and muralist born in 1981 near Kyiv. The son of an art enthusiast and collector of Orthodox icons, he showed a talent for drawing by the age of four. In 1999 he began painting graffiti as part of the Ingenious Kids crew in Kyiv, in a scene fuelled by imported magazines and VHS tapes from the United States.
In 2005, together with Aleksei Bordusov (AEC), he founded the duo Interesni Kazki — "interesting tales" in Ukrainian — after winning a graffiti festival in Yalta in 2004, where they painted what he considers Ukraine's first non-lettering mural. Together they built a surreal universe of fairy-tale characters, smooth gradients and symbols drawn from Orthodox iconography, the Soviet avant-garde of the 1920s and European surrealism. In 2016 he launched a solo career and shifted to black and white, exploring an aesthetic akin to antique engraving.
His murals appear on walls in Australia, Mexico, Canada, Germany, France and Spain. He has exhibited at Albertina Modern in Vienna, Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York and Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea in Milan. Since 2022 he has painted murals in Ukraine, Poland and France in support of the Ukrainian cause. His work is held in the Maeght Foundation's SOLO collection, and his clients include Hermès, SNCF and Paris Airports.
