Rafael Jonnier

Rafael Jonnier

Biography

Hailing from Cáceres in Brazil's Mato Grosso state, Rafael Jonnier left his hometown at nineteen to settle in Cuiabá and pursue art full-time. Self-taught in fine arts with training in interior design and graphic art, he built his early reputation on a regionally inflected Pop Art before taking to the streets of Cuiabá's historic centre with signature characters — "Pescador de Sonhos" (Dream Fisherman) and "Princesinha do Rio" — blending Warhol's conceptual approach with Basquiat's raw spontaneity.

A four-month residency in Amsterdam in 2018 produced the "Origins" exhibition and launched an international trajectory through Paris, London and Portugal. Back in Brazil, the artist opened the Jonnier Art Gallery in Cuiabá, a studio-gallery where a team produces canvases, sculptures and design pieces. His practice now extends into augmented reality, pushing a vivid Pop Art vocabulary into new digital territory.

Working across acrylic, spray paint and digital media, Jonnier weaves pop-culture icons, regional portraits and spiritual themes into a cohesive body of work. A leading figure in Mato Grosso's art scene, he represents a generation of Brazilian artists carrying the identity of their home regions onto the global stage.
