Biography
A scientist by day and urban artist by night, Lasco — a phonetic nod to France's most famous decorated cave — is a Lyon-based street artist who transposes prehistoric cave art onto city walls. Fascinated by prehistory since childhood, he pursued scientific studies that gave him access to painted caves including Chauvet, Altamira and Pech-Merle. Moved by drawings dating back 20,000 to 30,000 years, he chose the spray can as his tool for making this heritage accessible to everyone, in the street.
Steppe bisons, Przewalski horses, aurochs and Namibian rock-art giraffes now populate close to 300 walls across France. The artist works with stencils for swift nocturnal interventions and freehand for larger commissions, occasionally experimenting with Palaeolithic techniques themselves — flint, moss and blowpipes. His pieces can be found at the foot of the Musée de l'Homme in Paris, in Lyon's city hall and near the city's Museum of Contemporary Art.
Self-described as a "parietal street artist," Lasco runs educational workshops in schools and museums, collaborates with the Pech-Merle cave and has published a book compiling his creations. His practice rests on a simple conviction: humanity's first artists deserve as much visibility as the walls they have never stopped inspiring.
