Biography

C215 is the pseudonym of Christian Guémy, a French stencil artist born in October 1973 in Bondy, near Paris. He holds multiple degrees from the Sorbonne in history, art history and architectural history. After careers in trade research, textiles and finance, he turned to stencil art in 2006 upon settling in Vitry-sur-Seine. By 2007 he had joined the Le MUR project, quickly establishing a distinctive style built around close-up portraits of overlooked figures — the homeless, refugees, children and the elderly.

His scope has expanded steadily. In 2013, he painted a twenty-five-metre cat at the Nationale metro station in Paris. A year later, he created around fifteen illustrations for Ubisoft's Far Cry 4. In 2018, he exhibited at the Panthéon, and in 2019 painted portraits of Simone Veil across letter boxes in the 13th arrondissement. In 2022, he travelled to Kyiv to paint a large-scale mural for the Ukrainian parliament, followed in 2023 by a memorial portrait of soldier Oleksandr Matsievsky.

The artist has worked across more than twenty countries, from New Delhi and São Paulo to Istanbul, Dakar and Moscow. He was made a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2019, received France's National Order of Merit, and was decorated by Ukraine with its Order of Merit in 2023. The author of several books including "Le manuel du pochoir," he remains based in Vitry-sur-Seine, committed to giving visibility to those society overlooks.
