Biography

Morèje, born Jérôme Gulon in Paris in 1957, is a visual artist who became the first to bring mosaic into the field of street art. Trained in the medium by Riccardo Licata at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, he began placing his first mosaic pieces in the streets of Paris in 1988, exploring themes of time, repetition and fragmentation through an ancient craft reimagined for the urban landscape.

A painter and photographer by background, the artist built an academic career alongside his studio practice. He earned an agrégation in visual arts in 2003 and in 2007 defended the first doctoral thesis devoted to contemporary mosaic, titled "Mosaic, Between Stone and Concept." His notable series include the "Mosaic Pathways" begun in 1995 and the "Charlie Pathway," a portrait tribute to the victims of the January 2015 attacks, which appeared on the front page of Le Monde in January 2016.

Part of the second generation of Parisian street artists alongside Miss.Tic, Jef Aérosol and Jérôme Mesnager, he has exhibited regularly in France and internationally for over twenty-five years. His deliberately ephemeral pieces question the permanence of memory in public space, engaging quietly with architecture and the passage of time.
