Biography
Tyrone Wright, known as Rone, is an Australian street artist born in 1980 in Geelong, Victoria. He moved to Melbourne in 2001, began decorating skateboards and skate parks, and soon started pasting works across the city's laneways. In 2004, he co-founded Everfresh Studio, a collaborative space that helped shape Melbourne's public art scene.
His signature style centres on monumental female portraits — stylised figures he calls "Jane Doe" — painted directly onto the walls of derelict buildings. His practice shifted over time from stencils and wheat-pastes to photorealistic large-scale painting, exploring the tension between beauty and decay. In 2017, he unveiled "Omega," an immersive installation inside an abandoned Melbourne house, followed by "Empire" in a crumbling Dandenong Ranges mansion in 2019. His most ambitious project, "TIME," was created in secret at Flinders Street Station during lockdown and drew over two hundred thousand visitors in 2022.
His murals span cities including New York, London, Berlin, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Works are held by the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria, and in 2021 he received a federal arts grant of AUD 1.86 million — one of the largest ever awarded to a single Australian artist.
