Biography

Alexandre Monteiro, known as Hopare, is a French urban artist born in 1989 in the Paris region. He grew up in Limours, Essonne, and discovered graffiti at around thirteen in an abandoned factory. His encounter with his middle-school art teacher, street artist Marchal Mithouard (Shaka), proved decisive: Shaka showed him that graffiti could go far beyond simple vandalism and became his mentor.

In 2004, an arrest and a heavy fine for property damage marked a turning point. The mayor of Limours offered him the chance to create works for the town rather than tag illegally — he went on to design the signage for the new theatre. In 2006 he painted his first legal wall and joined the TSF Crew. A stint working for an interior designer sharpened his line work: straight, parallel and intertwining lines now structure portraits where geometric abstraction meets figuration. Spray paint, brushes, inks and rollers make up his technical toolkit.

His monumental murals span Paris, Montréal, Hong Kong, Lisbon, Casablanca and Seoul. In 2019 he created a 1,200-square-metre mural for the Super Bowl in Atlanta. He also works in sculpture and azulejos, and his three-dimensional portraits have been installed in Parisian public spaces. Represented on Artsper and by several galleries, he is regarded as one of the rising figures of French urban art.
