Biography
Stathis Tsavalias, known as Insane51, is a Greek street artist born in Athens in 1992. He started painting graffiti in 2007 and went on to study at the Athens School of Fine Arts as well as graphic and applied arts. Influenced by classical painters such as Caravaggio and Rembrandt, he brings an unusual command of light and shadow to his large-scale murals.
His signature technique, called "Double Exposure 3D," layers two separate images — one in red, one in cyan — onto the same wall. Seen with the naked eye, the murals present a complex overlapping composition; through anaglyph 3D glasses, two distinct artworks emerge depending on which lens the viewer looks through, producing a striking three-dimensional illusion. In 2017, he set a Guinness World Record for the largest glow-in-the-dark graffiti scroll, created in Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE.
Based in Athens, the artist has painted across numerous countries and taken part in festivals including Upfest in Bristol and Festival MURAL in Montreal. In 2021, he held his first solo exhibition at the Underdogs Gallery in Lisbon. His work is represented by galleries across Europe and documented by Urban Nation in Berlin.
