Biography
Maxilie Martel-Racicot, known as Monosourcil, is a multidisciplinary artist born in Montreal in 1989. She studied visual arts at Cégep Édouard-Montpetit, then pursued media and visual arts at UQAM, graduating in 2012, before beginning a master's degree in sculpture at Concordia University in 2016. Toward the end of her studies, she turned to street art and graffiti, drawn to a practice she found freer and more intuitive than the academic framework.
Her mural work features caricatured characters — businessmen, monsters, anxious robots — sporting a single eyebrow that has become iconic on Montreal's walls. Through these often distressed or unlikeable figures, the artist offers a critical view of the individual in Western society. In sculpture, she explores grotesque imagery centred on a "superwoman" figure. Her practice also extends to installation and performance.
She has taken part in Montreal's Festival MURAL, Calgary's BUMP Festival and collaborated with the mural organisation MU. Her work has been covered by Radio-Canada and Baron Mag, and her pieces are listed by Art Public Montréal. Active in Montreal's street art scene for over a decade, she has increasingly taken on large-scale mural commissions.
