Biography
Born in Montreal in 1983, Sandra Chevrier developed an early passion for drawing before earning a BFA in Visual and Media Arts from UQAM. Initially self-taught, she worked as a sushi chef before committing fully to her artistic practice. Her fascination with the human gaze — she once called herself a "gaze collector" — laid the foundation for a distinctive body of work that fuses hyperrealistic female portraits with comic book imagery.
Her breakthrough came with the "Cages" series, which has driven her international career since 2013. By layering superhero iconography over acrylic-painted faces, the artist examines tensions between power and vulnerability, freedom and confinement. In 2018, she held her first solo museum exhibition, "Cages and the Allure of Freedom," at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster, California, featuring life-sized sculptural works.
Her practice extends to large-scale urban art. In 2020, she partnered with Shepard Fairey to create a twelve-story mural in Austin, Texas, marking the centennial of the 19th Amendment. Exhibited in galleries and festivals across London, New York, Los Angeles, and Berlin, she remains based in Montreal, where she continues to push the boundaries of her mixed-media approach.
