Biography

Born in Kazakhstan in 1989, Ola Volo moved to Canada with her family at the age of ten. Growing up between the patterns and colours of Eastern Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, she drew early inspiration from the folklore of her childhood. She went on to earn a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver.

As a muralist and illustrator, the artist weaves intricate narratives that bring together people, animals, architecture, and nature in densely symbolic compositions. Her large-scale public works have attracted commissions from international brands including Louis Vuitton, Starbucks, Lululemon, and Volkswagen. In 2019, she completed "Walla Volo" in Montreal, described as the largest mural in Canada painted by a woman.

Now based in Montreal after years in Vancouver, she remains one of the few women painting monumental murals around the world. Her work has been featured at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum and at festivals such as Up Here in Sudbury. She also designed the cover art for Matt Mays' album Once Upon a Hell of a Time, which includes a song named after her.
