Biography
Born in Hawaii on April 14, 1979, Buff Monster studied fine arts at the University of Southern California before settling in Los Angeles in the late 1990s. He quickly built a reputation by plastering thousands of hand-silkscreened posters and stickers across the city, establishing an instantly recognisable visual world of cheerful characters set in candy-coloured, pink-drenched landscapes.
His work draws on an unlikely blend of influences — heavy metal music, Japanese culture, and ice cream — which he channels into paintings, sculptures, and installations with a bold pop aesthetic. In 2010, the Bristol City Museum acquired one of his paintings for its permanent collection. He appeared in Banksy's Oscar-nominated documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop" and in 2012 launched "The Melty Misfits," a trading card series inspired by Garbage Pail Kids.
Based in New York City since 2012, the artist has maintained a career spanning over two decades between street art and gallery exhibitions. His murals can be found worldwide, notably at the Wynwood Walls in Miami. He has collaborated with brands such as Disney, Coca-Cola, and Converse, and shown at galleries including StolenSpace in London and Corey Helford in Los Angeles.
