Fintan Magee

Biography

Born in 1985 in Lismore, New South Wales, Fintan Magee grew up in Brisbane in a creative household — his father a sculptor, his mother a landscape architect. Immersed in Brisbane's thriving graffiti culture from a young age, he started out as a graffiti writer before shifting to painting. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Griffith University (QCA) and began painting murals full time in 2009.

A social realist painter, the artist creates large-scale murals that depict ordinary people in everyday situations, exploring the relationship between human figures, nature, and the built environment. His themes — migration, overconsumption, loss, climate change — draw on a tradition of politically engaged muralism, shaped by the political murals of Northern Ireland that he encountered through his father's heritage. His style blends figurative realism with a softness inspired by children's book illustration.

Now based in Sydney, he has painted murals in over twenty countries, from India and Colombia to France and Norway. His solo exhibitions include "Big Dry" at Thinkspace (Los Angeles, 2018) and "Waves" at Galerie Mathgoth (Paris, 2017). He took part in the 2012 Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art and has shown at the Honolulu Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in Calais.
