Biography
Originally from Lebel-sur-Quévillon, north of the 49th parallel, Zema passed through Trois-Rivières, Jonquière, and Winnipeg before settling in Montreal in 1999. She discovered graffiti the following year and became one of the first women in the city to take it up. Starting with bombing and freight painting, she moved toward commissioned murals and in 2004 founded the La Paria collective, bringing together over twenty-five artists from Montreal's graffiti scene.
A multidisciplinary artist, she divides her time between mural painting, illustration, art direction, and tattooing — a craft she practises at Imago studio in Montreal. Her style, which she describes as pop-surrealist and "low-brow trash cartoon," is rooted in her years on the streets. She created one of her largest murals at the Festival MURAL in 2014 and regularly attends international tattoo conventions, from Montreux to Moscow.
