Biography
Born in France in 1985, Mathieu Bories — known as Mateo — earned a master's degree in art in Toulouse before moving to Montreal in 2008 to work as a graphic designer. In 2012, he set off on an extended journey through South America that transformed his practice: it was there that Mathieu Bories became Mateo, painting murals through encounters in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Bolivia. He then committed fully to art.
With over twenty years of street painting across the globe, the artist has developed a style he calls "baroque street art," blending feminine portraits with ornamental motifs drawn from ancient cultures. His compositions celebrate cultural diversity against contemporary uniformity, bridging urban art and decorative heritage — ceramics, textiles, painted rugs. This humanistic approach questions cultural identity and the aesthetic richness of traditions encountered during his travels.
Based in Montreal, he has exhibited at international fairs including Art Basel, Frieze, FIAC, and VOLTA, and shown at the Sharjah Islamic Arts Museum in the UAE in 2023. Represented by Galerie LeRoyer and Galerie Bartoux, his murals can be found in France, Canada, the United States, Spain, Latvia, and across Latin America. He is a regular participant in Montreal's Festival MURAL.
