Gene Pendon

Biography

Born in Ottawa in 1971, Gene Pendon — also known as Gene Starship — moved to Montreal as an art student and earned a BFA in drawing and painting from Concordia University. Influenced from childhood by hip-hop, urban culture, and pop culture, he began painting in the streets of Montreal and Ottawa before working as a production artist in the film industry and as an art educator for inner-city youth.

In 1998, he co-founded Heavyweight Production House (HVW8), a collective based in Montreal and Los Angeles that pairs live painting with music and urban culture. Alongside Tyler Gibney and Dan Buller, he creates painted compositions at events and concerts around the world. Career highlights include cover artwork for Earth, Wind & Fire and DJ Bobbito, a mural for the Manifest Hope exhibition supporting Obama's campaign, and the Adidas x Muhammad Ali Values project.

In Montreal, he works closely with the public art organisation MU, creating tribute murals for Oscar Peterson, Dany Laferrière, and the Théâtre de Quat'Sous. In 2017, he painted a monumental portrait of Leonard Cohen in collaboration with El Mac in downtown Montreal. His work has been exhibited across the United States, Europe, Mexico, Cuba, Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam.
