Biography
Born in 1975 on Terceira Island in the Azores, António Correia — known as Pantonio — trained in sculpture, drawing, and painting at the Instituto da Cultura dos Açores, then studied graphic arts at the Instituto Politécnico de Tomar on mainland Portugal. In 1990, he moved to Lisbon, where he painted his first wall murals. He initially worked in animation design, advertising, and children's illustration before dedicating himself entirely to urban art from 2011 onward.
His instantly recognisable style features a marine bestiary in motion — sardines, octopuses, birds, fantastical creatures — in fluid compositions dominated by the blue of the Atlantic, the black of volcanic seabeds, and the white of sea foam. The artist draws on the biodiversity and landscapes of his native Azores to create colossal murals in which supple, undulating lines capture the rhythm of the ocean.
In 2014, he painted what was then Europe's largest street art mural on the Tour Sienne in Paris — 66 metres high and 15 wide. The following year, the City of Paris commissioned him to create artwork for the Pont des Arts after its famous love locks were removed. His murals can be found in Portugal, France, Italy, China, Brazil, Canada, Poland, Ukraine, Tunisia, and Russia. He represented Portugal at UNESCO as early as 1993.
