Nick Sweetman

Biography

A Toronto native, Nick Sweetman is a multidisciplinary artist who holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art, Media & Design from OCAD University (2014), complemented the same year by a certificate in mural-making from Mural Routes. Inspired from childhood by pop art, surrealism, and graffiti, a trip to London in 2008 — and a street art exhibition at Tate Modern — sparked his commitment to large-scale public art.

Known as "the bee guy" in Toronto's urban art circles, he devotes much of his practice to pollinators, covering doors and walls across the city with striking images of nature to raise awareness about threats to ecosystems worldwide. Each year he organises the Butterfly Laneway Project in partnership with the David Suzuki Foundation, bringing together up to forty artists to transform laneways into open-air galleries.

Beyond Toronto, he has been invited to paint at festivals across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, including Eureka Street Art Festival, Wide Open Walls in Sacramento, Uptown Festival in Kelowna, and Hijos de la Lata in Puerto Escondido. He regularly collaborates with the City of Toronto, The STEPS Initiative, and several non-profits on community projects that combine art with environmental advocacy.
