Biography
Born in 1992 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Emmanuel Jarus — also known as Young Jarus — grew up in Saskatoon, where his grandmother, a painter herself, introduced him to drawing. As a teenager, he began painting portraits and figures on the freight trains that cross the Canadian prairies, images that went viral on Flickr and Reddit. He briefly attended the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto before forging his own path, combining influences from graffiti, classical painting, and online resources.
His work is defined by monumental portraits of striking realism, executed with brushes, acrylics, latex, and aerosol paint. His figures — often women or people he encounters during his travels — appear absorbed in thought, captured in a moment of contemplation. The artist reimagines how figurative art can exist in public space, transforming silos, buildings, and blank walls into open-air galleries.
Based in Toronto when not travelling the world, he has painted murals across Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Europe. He has participated in the Festival MURAL in Montreal, BUMP Festival in Calgary, and WALL\THERAPY in Rochester, and created a historic mural in Manhattan for the 75th anniversary of the United Nations with Street Art for Mankind.
