Biography
Born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Allan Ryan — known as Uber5000 — grew up by the sea, developing an early fascination with marine life and the ocean. After stints in Halifax and Vancouver, where he discovered graffiti on walls and trains, he studied printmaking at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and illustration at OCAD University in Toronto. This dual training led him to approach mural work with a distinctive eye, blending graphic precision with underwater imagery.
In 2012, he painted "The Reef Wall" in Toronto's Graffiti Alley — a roughly 7,000-square-foot mural depicting a coral reef teeming with marine life. The piece became one of the city's most photographed murals and was published in the Washington Post, Vogue, and Condé Nast Traveller, appearing regularly in films shot in Toronto.
Based in Toronto, the artist has painted murals across Canada, including in Saint John, New Brunswick, and several Ontario cities. His Toronto Tribute mural, on a three-storey building between Rush Lane and Richmond Street, compiles dozens of references to the city's culture. His work also extends to studio paintings and drawings.
