Biography
Alber is a French urban artist born in Tourcoing in 1986. He discovered graffiti at fifteen and adopted as his pseudonym his grandfather Albert's first name, minus its final letter — a short name, quick to write. Influenced by hip-hop culture, he began with tagging and letterwork before turning to characters, progressing from B-Boys to increasingly defined faces.
Trained in graphic design, he moved to Bordeaux for a design job and started painting in wastelands — the Niel barracks, Bacalan. In 2012 he was invited to paint the MUR Oberkampf in Paris, which opened the door to his first exhibitions. His style evolved from angular male faces to rounded female portraits, rendered in six-colour spray-paint gradations. His characters are recognisable by their sidelong gaze and the immediate visual impact he strives for: "I create visual impact."
More than two hundred of his works now punctuate the walls, facades and fountains of Bordeaux — Saint-Michel, Darwin, Bacalan, Cours Pasteur. The city now protects some of his pieces. He is represented by Galerie Barthélémy Bouscayrol and Galerie Mathgoth, and featured on Artsper. His practice is built between the street and the studio, each space feeding the other.
