Biography
Active in Rennes since 2009, WAR! is an anonymous street artist whose pseudonym, chosen in the late 1990s, pays tribute to Bob Marley and his fight for a fairer society. Self-taught, he grew up in the French countryside during the 1980s and turned to drawing and painting early on before making art his life's calling.
His technique relies on homemade telescopic poles fitted with paint rollers, allowing him to reach surfaces well beyond normal height. Wild animals — herons, meerkats, otters, fish —, plants and philosophical phrases reclaim the city's grey walls, driven by a desire to reconnect urban spaces with the living world. The artist maintains deliberate anonymity, preserving the narrative and poetic dimension of his interventions.
Once dismissed as vandalism, his murals have become tourist landmarks: the city of Rennes created an official walking route dedicated to his work. He produced the monumental seahorse at Saint-Malo's aquarium, a 27-metre sequoia mural on rue de Saint-Malo and Le bruit des loups at the Théâtre National de Bretagne in 2022. A TEDx speaker in 2017, he also designed the poster for the Transmusicales festival in 2016.
