Biography
Born in 1981 in Goes, the Netherlands, Stefan Thelen works under the name Super A following his graduation from the Grafisch Lyceum in Rotterdam in 2002. Based in Amsterdam, he combines traditional painting, graphic design and urban techniques to create figurative scenes that sit between realism and surrealism.
His large-scale murals and studio paintings subvert popular iconography — superheroes, consumer symbols, political figures — into hyperrealistic compositions loaded with visual metaphor. The artist interrogates human contradictions and cultural myths with sharp humour, building visual puzzles that blur the line between fiction and reality. He frequently collaborates with fellow Dutch artist Collin van der Sluijs on ambitious mural projects.
Represented by Thinkspace in Los Angeles and Gallery Droste in Paris and Berlin, he has painted walls in New York, Rotterdam, Copenhagen and Bogotá. Solo exhibitions from California to Germany have cemented an international presence that extends well beyond the Dutch scene.
