Biography
Francis Persu is a French graffiti writer from Auxerre, active since the early 1990s and now based in Nantes. As a teenager, he was struck by a televised performance by Suprême NTM and by watching graffiti artist Mode2 paint live on set. Together with his schoolmate Skey, he taught himself graffiti, graduating from markers on paper to spray cans along railway lines.
A founding member of the OCT crew in Burgundy, he has since joined numerous collectives across France — TG (Toulouse), ODV (Paris), IBS (Nantes) — before entering the Collectif 100 Pression in Nantes in 2009. His speciality is wild style, a form of complex lettering he has practised and refined for over twenty years. He produces his "wild letters" in swift spray-can strokes, in a register that shifts between freestyle graffiti and abstract expressionism, citing the influence of Pollock's action painting.
Drawn to derelict spaces, he hunts abandoned factories and ruined buildings alongside photographer "Attache Tes Lacets," favouring raw, untouched walls over prepared surfaces. He prefers chrome, copper and gold finishes to elaborate colour backgrounds. A published author, he is preparing a retrospective book tracing his various identities and practices. His work is referenced by the Nantes metropolitan authority and documented in the city's street art guide.
