Biography

Based in Antwerp, Toon Van Ishoven — known as Artoon — is a multi-media artist who learned to paint by watching his father, a diamond cutter who painted as a hobby with exceptionally sharp eyes. Having worked in graphic design, theatre set design and architectural video projection, he turned to outdoor murals partly out of pragmatism: his studio grew too hot in summer.

His technique blends roughly two thirds brushwork with one third spray paint or airbrush, giving his pieces a pronounced realism and three-dimensional quality. The artist systematically incorporates each wall's architectural features — shape, columns, openings — into the composition, making the building an active element of the artwork.

Notable commissions include a 7.5-by-24-metre mural for the European Commission and a piece for Het Booghuys, a dementia care home in Leuven. Active within the Wallin' and Treepack networks, he regularly collaborates with theatre directors, choreographers and writers, championing accessible art where the joy of the craft outweighs intellectualisation.
