La nena wapa wapa

Biography

Born Raquel Ruiz, La Nena Wapa Wapa — a pseudonym that started as a joke among friends from Albacete — is a Valencian urban artist who graduated in fine arts from the San Carlos Faculty of the Polytechnic University of Valencia in 2004. Her first contact with graffiti dates back to 2001, but it was from 2008 that she adopted stencil as her primary medium, refining the technique into her artistic signature.

Her world blends retro and Victorian aesthetics with politically engaged surrealism, exploring femininity, freedom and patriarchal critique. The artist favours a desaturated palette, often in black and white, with pared-back compositions designed to catch the eye and provoke thought. Her spray-and-stencil works fill the streets of Valencia and beyond, carrying an accessible, visual feminist message.

Her pieces are held in Valencian institutions including MUVIM, CCCC and L'Etno. Between 2015 and 2019, she co-organised the Graffitea Cheste and Muralitza't festivals, helping shape the local street art scene. She has also taken part in a mural project in Greater Paris alongside Disneylexya.
