Biography
Born in 1980 in Belluno, in the Italian Dolomites, Leonardo — known by the pseudonym Ericailcane, meaning "Erica the Dog" — trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. The son of a naturalist, he grew up surrounded by animals and developed an early imagination peopled with anthropomorphic creatures, fed by Victorian illustrations and medieval bestiary engravings.
His work is marked by scientific precision in the service of unsettling, humanised animal figures — tigers, rabbits, mice, cats — placed in disorienting contexts that carry social or ecological meaning. An illustrator, draughtsman and sculptor as much as a street painter, he frequently collaborates with Blu on monumental murals. The artist situates his practice in the graphic lineage of Grandville, merging classical engraving with urban intervention.
Active worldwide — across the United Kingdom, the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Palestine, Morocco, France and Germany — he notably painted the facade of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Bogotá in 2013 and has exhibited at the Muséum de Toulouse and the Musée du Temps de Besançon. He is represented by Galerie Martel in Paris.
