Biography
A2 is an anonymous French urban artist active in Paris. His pseudonym stands for "A squared" — "Amour et Anarchie" (Love and Anarchy) — the twin forces he places at the heart of his practice. A tagger since his teens, he turned to street art around 2010 and in 2011 adopted the persona of Louise Michel, the iconic figure of the Paris Commune, whom he depicts sporting a punk mohawk. His first major collage was placed near Radio Libertaire, where it remains visible today.
His visual vocabulary rests on a few recurring symbols: the anarchist heart (an "A" set inside a red heart rather than the traditional circle), portraits of Louise Michel and Emma Goldman, and an original character named Barbanar, a pacifist anarchist. His works are produced in his studio and installed at night using ladders, after careful site scouting — a process he describes as "fundamentally militant."
Over 1,800 pieces dot the streets of Paris, and he is gradually extending his reach to Brittany — Vannes, Pont-Aven, Brest, Quimper — where he has personal roots. Embracing anonymity out of a rejection of "street art narcissism," he prefers to bring art to people rather than invite them into a closed, paid venue. His output intensifies during social crises, such as the Yellow Vests movement and protests against pension reforms.
