Biography
Born in 1969, Invader is a French urban artist and graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Calling himself a "ULA" (Unidentified Living Artist), he began embedding ceramic tile mosaics inspired by the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders into city walls in 1996, driven by the desire to make art accessible beyond galleries and museums.
After officially launching his "invasion" project in Paris in 1998, he quickly expanded worldwide — cementing a mosaic onto the Hollywood Sign on New Year's Eve 1999 and systematically targeting major cities in organised waves. In 2004, he pioneered "Rubikcubism," recreating iconic artworks using hundreds of Rubik's Cubes; his cube rendition of the Mona Lisa fetched €480,200 at auction in 2020.
His works now span 79 cities across 20 countries, totalling nearly 3,900 pieces made from over 1.5 million ceramic tiles. Highlights include covert installations inside the Louvre and an underwater mosaic project in Cancún with sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. His FlashInvaders app, released in 2014, turns spotting mosaics into a global game. Still operating anonymously, he views street art as a necessary counterweight to advertising's dominance of public space.
