Philippe Vignal

Philippe Vignal

Biography

Born in Mozambique, the artist is a self-taught creator based in Sommières, in the Gard department of southern France. He maintains a dual practice: hyperrealistic painting — black-and-white portraits and nudes where light emerges from dark grounds — alongside urban mosaic work that brought him street recognition from 2014 onward.

Drawing on Invader's approach, he launched his signature "street bugs": geometric, colourful insects made from mosaic tiles, first scattered across Paris then in cities beyond. The series, instantly recognisable through its angular shapes and vivid palette, gave mosaic fresh visibility within the street art scene. A formative experience in Chile alongside mosaicist Isidora Paz Lopez deepened his commitment to the medium.

Philippe Vignal has exhibited in Marrakech, Saint-Tropez, Lyon, Casablanca, Rabat, New York and Montpellier between 2011 and 2017. His mosaics are documented on Street Art Cities and Urbacolors, while his paintings feature in the Saatchi Art catalogue — reflecting a practice that moves freely between gallery walls and urban surfaces.
