Biography
Born in 1976, Laurent Dupont grew up at 16 rue de l'Ourcq in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, where his parents of Portuguese origin worked as building caretakers. Hip-hop culture captivated him from the age of ten, and he made his first marker tags in the Cité de l'Ourcq in the late 1980s. After a hiatus, he returned to graffiti in the mid-1990s and began painting the walls of his neighbourhood in 2004.
His distinctive style combines stylised masks and totem animals in colourful compositions with a cross-cultural aesthetic. Travels to Brazil, Africa and Palestine feed a visual world that draws on pre-Columbian, African and Oceanian traditions. This encounter with ancestral cultures shaped a practice that is at once primitive, urban and politically engaged, with each mural interacting with the architecture and residents of the area.
In 2012, he launched the Ourcq Living Colors festival by inviting fellow graffiti artists to take over the long wall on rue de l'Ourcq. The event, run through his association Cultures Pas Sages founded in 2013, now gathers dozens of international artists each year. Da Cruz is recognised as both an artistic and social figure in the 19th arrondissement, featured on Wikipedia and highlighted by the City of Paris.
