Biography
Born in 1981 in Porto, the self-taught artist began writing graffiti in 1997 under the alias Pong 02, at the age of sixteen. He devoted his early years to lettering before exploring abstract forms and a more dreamlike, symbolic dimension. In 2008, he adopted the name Hazul and took a major stylistic turn, drawing on the iconography of ancient cultures and primitive civilisations.
His visual language blends cubist-inspired geometric forms, muted palettes and faceless figures — embodying anonymity and universality. His compositions evoke Byzantine mosaics, Islamic art and calligraphy, shaped by the curves of the Portuguese language. He works on canvas, paper, wood and large-format walls, as well as street collage. The municipality of Porto regularly chooses to preserve his pieces rather than remove them.
Among his major commissions is the 2018 mural at Estádio do Dragão, created for FC Porto's 125th anniversary. In 2024, his work was featured on TV5Monde's programme "Sur Les Murs". Active between Porto and Paris, Hazul is documented on Wikipedia and shown through Urbaneez, with pieces covered by Street Art Paris and I Support Street Art.
