Biography

Ador is a French urban artist born in 1972 in Philadelphia, now based in Nantes where he has lived and worked for many years. Trained at the Beaux-Arts, he took up graffiti in 2003 and moved on to mural painting from 2005, starting on the walls of his own neighbourhood on the outskirts of Nantes.

His work is populated by imaginary humanoid characters with long noses and large eyes, staged in what he calls "the enormous farce" or "the grand parade" — compositions that appear chaotic yet invite viewers to construct their own reading. He draws inspiration from comics, current events and encounters with fellow graffiti artists. With Semor, he has formed a duo active for over a decade, producing monumental frescoes across Nantes and its metropolitan area, including the "Parade, Balade et Distorsion" project for Le Voyage à Nantes in 2016.

A decade after his beginnings, his characters have travelled from Montréal to Shanghai, London to Los Angeles, and as far as Palestine and Madagascar. His work is held by Vertical Gallery in Chicago, Rocha Art Gallery in San Francisco and l'Azart Gallery in New York. He is the author of Olibrius, a 240-page monograph spanning eighteen years of painting.
