Biography

Ivo Santos, better known by his artist name SMILE, is a Portuguese muralist celebrated for his striking photorealism. His practice is built on extensive research before each composition, and he frequently turns to family members as models rather than relying on stock images, lending his portraits a personal, intimate quality.

His style stands out for hyperrealistic depictions of human figures, animals, and plant life, often carrying a social message tied to environmental preservation and contemporary awareness. He earned recognition early on with first-prize awards in Portugal — including in Odivelas in 2002 and Oeiras between 2004 and 2006 — and has since developed an international career, working on commissions for major brands across the world.

In 2014, the artist founded the ACUPARTE Cultural Association, which he still leads and which promotes urban art in Portugal. His mural "Wanna be an Artist," painted in Bairro Padre Cruz as part of the "Creating Change through Urban Art" project, captures his recurring world where childhood and creativity meet.
