Biography

Born in 1972 in Szczecin, Poland, Dan23 grew up in Clermont-Ferrand before moving to Strasbourg to study drawing and train as a teacher. From 1994, he began painting portraits of humanitarian figures on walls — Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks — and caught the attention of hip-hop musicians who invited him to perform live painting during concerts, making him a pioneer of the practice.

Through studying these figures' struggles, the artist discovered their shared concern for environmental preservation and gradually shifted his work toward ecology. He now paints animals and insects to raise awareness about biodiversity loss, the decline of bees, and the damage of industrial agriculture. His style combines expressive spray-can and brush portraits, often rendered in vivid colors that light up Strasbourg's facades.

Active since the 1980s, he has painted walls in cities worldwide and authored several books documenting his work. Recognized as a leading figure in Strasbourg's street art scene, his committed murals turn urban spaces into accessible ecological platforms.
