Biography
A graduate of the Bordeaux School of Fine Arts in 2014, where she practiced video, performance, and installation, Jessica Hartley — known as Rouge — gradually focused her work on figurative painting. Armed with brushes rather than spray cans, she developed an academic approach to wall painting, composing murals that could be described as romantic in their observation of reality.
Her work confronts the human and natural worlds to articulate what she calls "a common flesh of the world," addressing ecological catastrophe, the limits of materialism, solitude, and feminism. The artist does not shy away from provocation and reflection while remaining deeply accessible, bringing the academic into the street and the street into the academic. Her painting, free and vibrant, explores contemporary tensions and beauty with singular energy.
Represented by Galerie Chenus Longhi since 2020, she divides her time between studio work and international muralism festivals. Her murals mark the walls of Bordeaux, Boulogne-sur-Mer, and Paris, where a floral intervention in Ménilmontant demonstrates her ability to transform urban facades into monumental paintings.
