Biography
Born on January 23, 1952, in Mananjary, Madagascar, Daniel Bellec grew up on the island until the age of nine before moving to France, first to Lorient and then to Nantes. A graduate of the National School of Architecture of Nantes, he began painting under the pseudonym Roger Dimanche in 1988, becoming one of the pioneers of street art in the city with large faces on the wastelands of the Isle of Nantes, bridge pillars, and abandoned buildings.
His work, often inspired by popular comic strips, combined mural painting and stencil techniques in an instantly recognizable figurative style. Among his emblematic pieces is Lola est là, a mural that became a landmark of the Nantes urban landscape and was referenced in several books on street art. He also exhibited in galleries, cafés, restaurants, and at festivals, while opening his studio in Port-Louis, Morbihan, to visitors.
Regarded as one of the pioneers of urban art in Nantes, he played a decisive role in shaping the city's street art scene from the late 1980s onward. Daniel Bellec passed away on April 23, 2020, in Nantes, leaving a lasting mark on the walls of the city.
