Where to find street art in Wien (Austria)
Vienna's street art scene took shape from 1995 onward with the establishment of legal walls, followed in 2004 by the founding of KÖR Wien, a public institution that has supported nearly 300 public art projects. Wiener Taube plaques began marking authorized spaces across the city in 2005. The Calle Libre Festival, launched in 2014, has since grown into Central Europe's largest street art festival, covering more than 70 walls across 13 districts each year.
The Donaukanal (Danube Canal), running through the city centre, is the undisputed epicentre of urban art, with continuously evolving murals along its banks. The 16th district of Ottakring draws artists to the Brunnenmarkt — home to a large mural by Bezt/Etam Cru — Yppenplatz and the Die Schöne hotspot. The 2nd district's Mural Harbor, launched in 2014, transformed industrial buildings into an open-air gallery with over 100 international murals.
Local artist Nychos, known for his exploded anatomy paintings, is the most internationally recognised figure of the scene, alongside contributors like ROA, Stinkfish and Kobra. Five marked walking routes guide visitors through the works scattered across Vienna. KÖR Wien continues to commission temporary and permanent installations throughout the Austrian capital.
