Where to find street art in Montpellier (France)
Montpellier's street art scene took shape along the Verdanson riverbanks, where successive generations of graffiti artists have worked since the 1990s. The association Line Up, active in the city since that decade, helped structure the local scene through workshops, events and guided tours. The range of techniques — stencils, paste-ups, lettering, mosaics, trompe-l'œil — makes it one of the most stylistically diverse urban art destinations in France.
The Écusson, the medieval historic centre, features Invader mosaics and C215 stencil portraits tucked into its narrow streets. Rondelet offers entire walls given over to graffiti artists, while Figuerolles — a multicultural working-class quarter — concentrates socially engaged works on ecology and cultural diversity. The Verdanson riverbanks and Saint-Roch, home to a monumental trompe-l'œil mural facing the church, complete the main creative zones.
Monsieur BMX developed his signature concept of bicycles mounted on walls in this city, a format now exported to Paris, Brussels and New York. Local artists Mist, Zest, Noon and Sunra contribute regularly to collective productions. The K-Live festival at Parc Montcalm gathers national and international artists each year for large-scale graffiti works. The Clap'Arts Festival in June and the ZAT events maintain an active urban art calendar.
