Where to find street art in Hamburg (Germany)
Hamburg's street art culture is rooted in the counter-culture of the 1960s, when St. Pauli defined itself as an alternative district. Around the turn of the millennium, the city became one of Germany's main hubs for hip-hop and graffiti. In 2009, some 200 artists mobilised to prevent the demolition of the historic Gängeviertel quarter, a protest that became a turning point for urban art recognition in the north.
The Schanzenviertel and Karoviertel hold the highest concentration of street art, with works by local figures like Rebelzer visible near the St. Pauli Millerntor Stadium. Along the Elbe in Altona, the FrauenFreiluftGalerie lines two kilometres of riverbank with around fifteen murals. The Gängeviertel and HafenCity round out the key zones, the latter hosting the Mentalgassi collective's #UNUEBERSEEBAR project.
Three festivals define the annual calendar: STAMP, which brings more than 1,000 artists from ten countries to Platz der Republik in Altona; the altonale, a neighbourhood-wide cultural event; and KNOTENPUNKT, running since 2013, which has produced over twenty monumental murals across Hamburg. Guided tours make the city one of Germany's most navigable street art destinations.
