Where to find street art in Rotterdam (Netherlands)
Rotterdam holds a unique place in European street art history, shaped by post-war reconstruction that replaced over 90% of its historic city centre with contemporary architecture, creating vast blank surfaces for artists. Street art has been present since the 1970s, and the city is home to the Rotterdam Street Art Museum — the world's first outdoor street art museum — managing a trail of some eight kilometres of murals.
The Witte de Withstraat, known as the city's "Axis of Art," concentrates galleries, bars and street works along a 320-metre stretch in the Cool district. The Afrikaanderwijk in the Feijenoord district became an urban art hub through successive editions of the All Caps festival (2021, 2022, 2023). The Oude Westen and West-Kruiskade neighbourhoods host a growing number of local and international pieces.
Leading local artists include Ox-Alien, Daan Botlek and Telmo Miel, alongside international contributors such as Smug and Ramon Martins. The All Caps festival and the ROAR (Rotterdam Art Ride, 2018) — which transformed metro pillars into a public art gallery — are the main recurring events. The Rewriters010 app lets visitors explore the murals independently across the city.
