Where to find street art in Saint-Joseph (Réunion)
Street art occupies a modest but present space in Saint-Joseph, a commune in the south of Réunion Island. The first graphic interventions appeared in the early 2000s, carried by the artistic momentum that has run through the island since the 1990s. The local scene is less documented than those of Saint-Denis or Saint-Pierre, but recurring initiatives confirm a living practice.
The Manapany Festival, held at Manapany-les-Bains, has included an urban arts strand since at least 2016, featuring graffiti competitions and breakdance performances. The Four à chaux seafront site hosts these outdoor artistic events. It was Laurent Imanga, a local organiser, who formalised this urban programme in 2016 following his success at the Joseph Hubert Trophies.
The commune benefits from the network of artists active across the island: Jace, Air 1 Duc, Yren, and Abeil One contribute works periodically in the south. The Réunion Graffiti festival, the first urban arts festival in the Indian Ocean, provides a unifying framework linking the island's communes. Spontaneous practices — tags, murals, and collages — animate the walls of the town centre and surrounding residential areas.
