Where to find street art in Barcelona (Spain)

Barcelona's street art scene took root in the 1970s following the end of the Franco dictatorship, reaching its peak in the early 2000s when artists painted openly without legal risk. A crackdown introduced fines of up to €1,000, redirecting creativity toward legal channels. Montana Cans — the world's largest spray-paint brand, founded in the Catalan capital — and the Montana Gallery (est. 2007) attest to the city's lasting influence on global graffiti culture.

Poblenou is the main hub, with monumental murals on former industrial walls along Carrer de Pere IV and around La Escocesa, an artist residency in the 22@ district active since 1999. El Raval, between La Rambla and Avinguda del Paral·lel, offers dense layers of stencils and painted shutters. Gràcia, El Born and the Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies in Poble Sec are also key destinations.

Notable artists include El Pez, Miss Van, Kenor, Btoy, Zosen and Tvboy. The Montana Gallery and Base Elements Gallery in the Gothic Quarter are the main institutional venues. The Mural Festival of La Escocesa (2012) brought outdoor shows to Poblenou, while the Open Wall Conference has introduced large-scale murals and public debates across Barcelona.
