Where to find street art in Miami (United States)
Miami's graffiti culture took root in the 1970s, with local writers like Aladdin emerging as early pioneers. The scene gained global recognition in December 2009, when developer Tony Goldman opened Wynwood Walls during Art Basel Miami Beach, converting the empty warehouses of a former garment district into a curated outdoor gallery for large-scale murals.
Wynwood anchors the city's art map with over 200 murals spread across 50 city blocks, representing artists from 16 countries. Little Haiti extends the tradition with community-rooted murals along NE 2nd Avenue. Little Havana brings a Cuban dimension to Calle Ocho, while Miami's Overtown neighbourhood preserves works by Purvis Young, whose paintings are held in over 60 international museums.
Every December, the Wynwood Mural Fest refreshes the district's walls during Art Basel, drawing international artists for new commissions. The Museum of Graffiti, the first museum worldwide dedicated entirely to the medium, opened its permanent collection here. Artists such as Shepard Fairey and Os Gemeos have left landmark works, and a free monthly Art Walk sustains the neighbourhood's creative energy.
