Where to find street art in Köln (Germany)
Cologne's street art identity was shaped early by Thomas Baumgärtel, the "Bananensprayer," who has been marking museums and galleries worldwide with his banana stencil since 1986. Ehrenfeld's Heliosstraße is considered the birthplace of street art in the city, where industrial buildings of the 1990s offered the first large-scale surfaces to artists. The biennial CityLeaks Urban Art Festival, launched in September 2011, established the city as one of Germany's leading urban art destinations.
Ehrenfeld holds the highest concentration of large-scale murals, with works by ROA, Herakut, Faith47 and INTI along Venloer Straße and Vogelsanger Straße. Mülheim, on the right bank of the Rhine, and Nippes — where the Geldernstraße railway underpass was completely repainted in 2019 — offer equally rich walking routes. In Kalk, a 150-metre wall on the artificial Kalk Alp hill was co-created by 40 professional graffiti artists.
SatOne, El Bocho and Hendrik ECB Beikirch are among the most active local contributors, alongside international regulars of CityLeaks. Running every two years since 2011, the festival combines monumental murals, interactive installations and public workshops across Cologne. Bike tours and guided walks connect the main street art zones across the city.
