Where to find street art in Grenoble (France)
Street art in Grenoble has deep roots that predate the festival era. In 1975, the collective Les Malassis installed eleven large panels at the Grand Place shopping centre, reworking Géricault's "Raft of the Medusa" as a critique of consumer society. Four years later, Ernest Pignon-Ernest created a fresco commissioned by the city's mayor, establishing an early tradition of public art patronage. The 1983 "Berriat 83" exhibition further shaped the local scene, and from 1998 onwards artist Nessé gradually covered 3,000 m² of the Estacade — a 600-metre railway viaduct spanning the city — turning it into one of the most singular open-air canvases in France.
The modern chapter opened in 2015 when former professional snowboarder Jérôme Catz and the Spacejunk association launched the Grenoble Street Art Fest. Rue Génissieu in the Championnet district, where Spacejunk's gallery and studios are based, quickly became the epicentre of the movement. The Berriat and Saint-Bruno areas form a second landmark corridor, dense with murals of contrasting styles. The neighbouring districts of Capuche and Villeneuve, and the surrounding communes of Fontaine, Pont-de-Claix and Saint-Martin-d'Hères, joined the festival's scope from 2018, extending the route well beyond the city centre.
Now known as Street Art Fest Grenoble-Alpes since its 2019 rebrand, the annual late-spring event has brought together artists such as Shepard Fairey, C215, Seth, INTI, Goin, Monkey Bird, Nevercrew and Augustine Kofie, resulting in more than 235 permanent walls across the metropolitan area. A dedicated film strand, the Street Art Movie Fest, runs in partnership with the Grenoble Cinémathèque. The local tourist office organises seasonal guided tours on foot, by bicycle or tram for those wishing to explore the collection systematically.
