Where to find street art in Athina (Greece)
Street art in Athens emerged in the early 2000s, with artists such as INO already active on the city's walls. The pivotal moment came on 6 December 2008, when police shot and killed 15-year-old student Alexandros Grigoropoulos in Exarcheia, triggering days of riots and a wave of politically charged murals across the country. Greece's austerity measures from May 2010 onward further accelerated the movement: the decade 2008–2018 is widely described as the golden age of Athenian street art, drawing international artists to its walls.
Exarcheia, the historically anarchist district around the Polytechnic, is the epicentre of activist street art: stencils commemorating Grigoropoulos, murals along Eressos Street, and a massive BLU installation at Navarinou Park. Psyrri — the "Soho of Athens," stretching from Monastiraki Square toward Omonia — is considered the movement's original home, with Sarri Street, Platia Iroon and Lucas Nika Street dense with portraits and colourful pieces. On Pireos Street in Kerameikos/Gazi, STMTS painted "I Love Life" on the Technopolis facade and INO completed "The Last Supper" (90 metres, no. 90). In Metaxourgeio, WD's owl mural "Knowledge Speaks, Wisdom Listens" (Megalou Alexandrou/Samou, 2016) has become one of the city's most photographed works.
The current scene is led by local figures — INO, WD, SimpleG, STMTS and Vasmou — alongside frequent international contributors such as BLU, Millo and Borondo. The UrbanAct collective curates city-wide mural commissions and the annual Petit Paris d'Athènes festival has brought several works to Metaxourgeio. Delirium Athens Urban Art Gallery in Neos Kosmos is one of the rare dedicated urban art spaces. Alternative Athens runs walking tours covering Psyrri, Gazi and the Monastiraki area.
