Where to find street art in Roubaix (France)

Once the world capital of textile manufacturing, this northern French city carries the legacy of its industrial past on its very walls. The street art scene took root in the early 2000s, finding fertile ground in abandoned factories and exposed brick façades left behind by deindustrialization. A key turning point came in 2004, when La Condition Publique — a 1902 wool-conditioning warehouse rehabilitated by architect Patrick Bouchain as part of Lille's year as European Capital of Culture — became a hub for urban creativity. In 2017, the landmark exhibition "Street Génération(s) — 40 Years of Urban Art" drew 43,000 visitors and brought together 50 international artists, cementing the city's reputation on the global street art map.

The Pile district forms the backbone of the street art trail, with murals spanning boulevard de Belfort, rue Franklin, rue Monge, rue de Babylone and rue Jacques Prévert across nearly two kilometers. Ted Nomad's "Little Girl with Watering Can," painted on a shared garden wall on rue Franklin, has become one of the most recognizable works in the area. Near the train station, the Dép'Art Urbain parking structure serves as a vertical gallery with some thirty documented pieces. A 10-kilometre route links over 80 spots and 120 murals, best explored on foot or by bike using the official downloadable map.

The annual URBX festival (formerly #XU, launched in 2015) drives the contemporary scene, commissioning new large-scale works each year from international artists. JonOne — who set up a 305 m² studio here in 2017 — Jef Aérosol, C215, VHILS, and Jimmy C (whose portrait of Camille Claudel stands near the Town Hall) have all left their mark. Guided tours depart from the tourism office every weekend.
