Where to find street art in Lille (France)

Street art in the metropolitan area has grown over nearly forty years. Local artists began marking the city's walls in the 1990s, and by the early 2000s the movement had gained institutional backing. Among the pioneering figures are stencil artist Jef Aérosol, internationally recognised for his portraits, and Mimi le Clown.

The Moulins and Wazemmes districts form the heart of the inner-city trail. Around Rue d'Iéna and Rue des Sarrazins in Wazemmes, murals, stencils and paste-ups fill this multicultural neighbourhood. Moulins hosts large-scale works between Gare Saint-Sauveur and Jean-Macé school, while Fives shelters a more underground scene with social themes. Vieux-Lille features micro-interventions in its historic streets.

The scene revolves around recurring events: Les Fenêtres qui parlent (2001), an International Graffiti Battle (2009), the International Mural Art Biennial founded in 2013 by Collectif Renart, Expériences Urbaines (2015) and Can'Art (2018). Artists such as M-City, Jana und Js and Monkey Bird Crew have contributed to these gatherings. Lille3000 commissions public artworks and the metropolis offers 21 signposted street art trails.
